Helena Chaja Rubinstein, a rabbi's grandaughter and founder of the eponymous and enormously successful cosmetics firm Helena Rubinstein Inc. was born on December 25, 1870, in Krakow Poland, the eldest of eight daughters. She attended university in both Poland and Switzerland where she briefly studied medicine before immigrating to Australia, where she had relatives, and where her milky complexion and sense of style was noted by local light skinned women suffering overexposure to the sun there.

Residence of Charles R. Lohman Ann Lohman, also known as Madame Restell, provided contraceptives and abortions to women looking to prevent or terminate unwanted pregnancies—a practice that remained exceptionally lucrative even as antebellum abortion laws hardened. By the 1870s, Restell’s services made her one of the richest women in New York City; her profits funded the construction of her lavish mansion, pictured here, on the corner of the Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street.
