Saint Peter's Church

Lexington Avenue between East 53rd and 54th Streets, ahead of subway construction. The northward extension of the IRT East Side Line, later dubbed the Lexington Avenue Line would be completed more than six years later, in 1918. This view includes two important landmarks of Lexington Avenue religious life: at left, the 1870s-era Central Synagogue; at far right (No. 619), St. Peter's Lutheran Church. The latter building has since been replaced with an angular granite structure described by the New York Times's David Dunlap as "New York’s most architecturally successful postwar sanctuary."

Apartment houses and what looks like a church line the avenue. Streetcars and horsedrawn carriages are traveling along the avenue. The street is torn and repaved along the left of the image, possibly for underground construction. Pedestrians are active on the sidewalk. A crane can be seen on a cross street to the right.

A number of apartment houses flank each side of the street, with a ground floor business occupying a corner building to the right. Streetcars and pedestrians are in view. In the background, the famous Central Synagogue can be seen. There is debris (possibly construction-related) in the street.
