Doorways of New York image

Doorways of New York
Story

Often overlooked, doors are perhaps the most important feature of a building. They are the means by which we escape the often crowded and chaotic streets of the city. Every building has one (well, maybe except for the Raymond Street Jail which was accidentally constructed in 1836 sans front door), but some outfit this largely utilitarian feature with more panache than others. This collection highlights some the city's loveliest historic doorways, from the simple but classic columns of early 19th century Federal rowhouses to the gloriously geometric brickwork of Art Deco apartment houses, and everything in-between.

River House
Post

River House ca. 1932 The River House a luxurious 64-unit apartment building overlooking the East River. Designed by the architects Bottomley, Wagner and White in 1931 it has a 14-story U-shaped base creating a courtyard and a 26-story tower. This innovative grand gray brick and limestone building with elaborate detailing and terrace garden rooftop marked a turning point in the history of skyscraper housing; combining the courtyard with the tower. Vincent Astor, Archibald M. Brown, Edward B. Meyer and J. B. Patterson were among the residents in these exclusive accommodations located uncomfortably near dilapidated tenements. This very condition of extreme class distinction may have inspired Sidney Kingsley's play, Dead End.
