“31-39 De Kalb Ave., at the northwest corner of Flatbush Ave. Extension. Also seen, is Flatbush Ave. Extension, west side, north from De Kalb Ave., to Fleet Street. July 22, 1934.” Today, the northwest corner of DeKalb Avenue and the Flatbush Avenue Extension is home to the original location of Junior’s, the restaurant chain known for New York-style cheesecake. In 1934, the building’s tenants included clothing retailers, a storefront doughnut shop, and the Enduro sandwich shop, owned by Junior’s founder Harry Rosen.

Storefront signage is a ubiquitous feature on New York City streets. Today, signs can barely seem worth noticing, the well-known fonts and logos blending into the scenery. But when the streets of New York were lined with mom and pop shops, the design of signs (through fonts, images, and use of space) often allowed these individual stores to stand out. The diversity of signage is especially eye-catching in historical photographs.
