Brooklyn Hall of Records
Post
Hall of Records, ca. 1950. The Brooklyn Civic Center looks much different today than it did in the early 20th century. At that time the largest municipal building was the Hall of Records. Erected on the corner of Boerum and Fulton, the classical, limestone building was designed by William Mundell between 1885 and 1887. The building housed the vital records of first the city of Brooklyn and then the borough of Brooklyn. In the 1950s during the Civic Center Urban Renewal, the Hall of Records and its even older neighbor, the Brooklyn Courthouse, were razed for the newly expanded Cadman Plaza. In 1961 the Brooklyn Law School replaced the two grand 19th-century buildings.
