Mayor John Purroy Mitchel Memorial
Post
Mayor John Purroy Mitchel Memorial, Central Park Reservoir, ca. 1975. This bronze bust was designed by the prominent German-born sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman, honoring Mitchel, New York's 95th Mayor. The Bronx-born politician served a single term at City Hall, notable for police reforms and an assassination attempt in April 1914. Mitchel, viewed as too cozy with the city's upper crust, failed to win re-election, losing in the Republican primary. Out office, Mitchel enlisted in the Army's Air Guard but died in a training flight accident over Louisiana. The former mayor fell from his airplane when it entered a sudden tailspin; his seatbelt had not been fastened.
