475 Fifth Avenue (at left), ca. 1975. Built in 1926 for the Farmers' Loan and Trust, 475 Fifth Avenue was designed by Starrett & Van Vleck, who built in the Italian Romanesque Style.

In the 1940 movie "Young People," Shirley Temple sang and danced to the lighthearted ditty, "Fifth Avenue." Let's use the lyrics to guide us through the history of the grandest thoroughfare in New York City.

Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 41st Street Fifth Avenue, north from 41st Street, showing pupils of the Spence School for Girls out for their daily walk. At the extreme left is the reservoir which for many years covered the site now occupied by the New York Public Library. In the left background is the Bristol office building, formerly the Hotel Bristol. This was demolished in 1929 to make way for the Salmon Tower. The spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral may be dimly seen in the right background. Temple Emanu-El, demolished in 1927 is the spired building in the center. 1900. Ewing Galloway, Photographer.
