Modeling the Water Supply
Story
The Board of Water Supply used models for design and celebration, from critically serious to comical and extravagant. Models were communication tools, explaining and promoting the City’s infrastructure projects, and sometimes helped determine the locations of structures or best way to build them. This story starts with some technical models, then looks at those that celebrated NYC’s water supply system and world-class engineering.
245 Park Avenue
Post
Designed by the same firm as the Empire State Building, 245 Park Avenue replaced the 1911-built Grand Central Palace. Completed in 1967, the 48-story skyscraper has variously been called the American Tobacco Company Building, the American Brands Building, and the Bear Stearns Building (before they moved to 383 Madison Avenue). In the late 1970s, the publishing firm Doubleday was headquartered here. Today tenants include Heineken, Major League Baseball, and the asset and wealth management groups ofJ.P Morgan Chase.

Bord of Water Supply. "Fountain of Youth" at Board of Water Supply exhibit at Grand Central Palace as part of the Silver Jubilee of Greater New York which celebrated the first 25 years of the five boroughs' unification as one city. In this photo, Olympic gold medalist and engineer Ray C. Ewry is Rip Van Winkle and his colleague Maurice Solon is Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon. Washington Irving's character Rip Van Winkle wandered into the Catskill mountains, partied with the ghosts of Henry Hudson's crew, and fell asleep for twenty years. He became an early mascot of sorts for the Board of Water Supply as it ventured into the Catskills to find a source of clean water for the city. June 13, 1923.
247 Park Avenue
Manhattan: Park Avenue - 46th Street Park Avenue, north from and including 46th Street. Silver Jubilee Exposition of 1923, the 25th Anniversary of Greater New York. The band is in the middle of 46th Street. To the right is No. 247 Park Avenue, about two years old. The 47th to 48th Street lot is still vacant; on the east side, in the next block north, the Park Lane is under construction. Then comes the Railroad Y.M.C. A, hiding all but a small glimpse of St. Bartholomew's and the Hotel Ambassador, between 51st and 52nd Streets. On the west side of the Avenue the first building is the Hotel Marguery, (about 1918) between 47th and 48th Streets. Compare this with the photographs made from the same spot in 1913 and with the Grand Central railroad yards in 1903, also with the same scene a year and a half later in January 1925. June 1923.
