Copacabana
Post
One of the longest-lived night clubs in the City, the Copacabana at 10 East 60th Street, which opened in 1940, was among the most famous as well. June Allyson and Carroll Baker got their start in this tropical oasis, and such greats as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Jimmy Durante and Joe E. Lewis performed there when they were in town. The colorful, fruity headpieces worn by another Copa favorite, "the Brazilian Bombshell" Carmen Miranda, became the symbol for the nightclub. In 1960 Bobby Darin recorded "Darin at the Copa" there. The club closed in 1973.
