Don't Call Manhattan Schist: Or the Famous Rocks of New York
Story
While New York City is certainly best known for its towering skyscrapers and classy historic districts, its earliest monuments of stone are just that: stone. The geologic landscape of the city was formed between 20,000 and 18,000 years ago with the movement of the Wisconsin Ice Sheet down from Canada. The rock and debris deposited from the ice sheet, as well as the valleys it deepened, bedrock it smoothed and glacial grooves it left, formed the landscape of the city that began to grow in the colonial era. In some cases the rocks have been moved or crumbled in the name of urban development. But some of this geologic history can still be seen within the urban environment. This collection highlights some of the more well-known geologic features.
Rocking Stone
Post
The Rocking Stone is an example of a glacial erratic left stranded by the masses of ice during the last Ice Age. Even before the Bronx Zoo opened, the Rocking Stone was a popular attraction because, being perfectly balanced on a rocky drift, a small push would easily set it swaying. (Alas safety concerns have meant that the 30-ton stone has long since been swayable.)

Bronx: Bronx Park - Rocking Stone. 9 -ROCKING STONE, Bronx Park. Another "Glacial Waif," left stranded by the masses of ice during the Glacial Epoch. Not wishing to have this grat bowlder in the way of his farm yard, an early owner tried to have it dragged away, but twelve yoke of sturdy Westchester County oxen failed to move it an inch. Yet it is so nicely balanced on a rocky drift that the pressure of a strong finger will easily set it swaying back and forth.
