291 Fifth Avenue
Post
East side of Fifth Avenue between 30th and 31st Streets, ca. 1907. 291 Fifth Avenue, which sat in the middle of the depicted block, was the location of Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz's Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession. Originally painter and photographer Steichen's studio, in 1905, the space initially developed into a gallery for exhibiting work by Photo-Secessionist photographers. (They held the somewhat unpopular idea that the significance of a photograph was not the subject but the manipulation of the image by the artist/photographer to achieve his or her subjective vision). The space was later a preeminent center for the exhibition of modern European and American artists. Known as "291," it was a pioneer, being the first American gallery to exhibit works by Rodin, Matisse, Cézanne, and Picasso. The Armory Show of 1913 introduced these modern artists to a large audience. (Stieglitz served as an honorary vice-president for the event.) In the years following the Armory Show, he focused on new American artists, most notably, Georgia O'Keeffe. O'Keeffe's one-woman show at 291 in 1917 was its final exhibition. 291 closed in 1917 amid Stieglitz's financial troubles prompted by the war and his doubts about his role in the promotion of modern art.
