Links Club, 1937. Nos. 36 and 38 East 62nd Street were originally a pair of brownstones constructed in the 1880s. Famed conductor, Anton Seidl lived in No. 38. In 1916 the lots were sold to the Links Club. The gentlemen's club was devoted to golfing interests and was the brainchild of Charles B. Macdonald. MacDonald was the vice-president of the United States Golf Association, tournament- winning golfer, and the architect of American golf courses. The new Cross & Cross-designed clubhouse, completed in 1917, was a 40-foot fronted Georgian Revival structure with a subtle, nearly hidden entrance, a few steps below the sidewalk. Though plans were discussed for a driving range on the roof, instead, a tradition roof garden was constructed. Famous members of the club have included President Eisenhower, ambassadors, governors, senators, the CEOs of all the major financial firms, and any number of other extremely influential men. It has been called the perhaps the most powerful club in the world. The Links, with no exterior signage that calls out the building as a clubhouse, still occupies this stately structure one hundred years after its construction.
