32-46 West 23rd Street, ca. 1981. The original section of this wide, multi-address building is at left (nos. 32-36). This three-lot-wide, cast iron fronted building (with an out of context glass curtain wall on the top floors) was designed by Henry Fernbach in 1878 for the Stern's Dry Good Store. Stern's was a large emporium with imported goods that served middle-class to upper-class shoppers. In 1880 the three lots to the east were purchased for an extension, and then a number of lots to the west were purchased in 1886. Still the business grew and the store required more space. In 1892 William Schickel enlarged the building on the western lots, creating another cast iron building at nos. 38-46. The entire building now looked like a center section with matching sides. Stern's moved out in 1913, but the building went on to house industrial and manufacturing firms. By 1920 it is one of a number of Manhattan locations that housed functions of the Tiffany Studios, the stained glass company. Many well-known Tiffany pieces are stamped with 46 West 23rd Street.
