Kingsbridge Branch, data unknown. Designed by McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1905, the small neo-Federal Kingsbridge Branch was one of the smallest Carnegie's constructed in the city. It is only 3,700 square feet. The building, which it set far back from the sidewalk, is surrounded by a generous lawn. The library was decommissioned in 1958 when a new larger branch was built on West 231st Street. Today the structure functions as a pre-school.
Carnegie Libraries of the Five Boroughs
Story
πIn 1901 after selling his corporation for $500 million, steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie announced a $5.2 million donation to the City of New York for the construction of public library buildings. With this gift, 67 branch libraries were constructed in the five boroughs between 1903 and 1929. π
