Rock pit at 17th Street and Fourth Avenue (as Union Square East and Park Avenue South were then known), during the construction of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line, January 9, 1901. The trees visible at upper right are in Union Square Park. Note the subterranean surveyor at the bottom of the image.
