A Cathedral Worthy of New York: St. Patrick's
Story

Catholics make up over twenty percent of the population of the United States. However, there was a time when the novelty of a Roman Catholic cathedral in the country made it a tourist destination and an artist's subject. St. Patrick's on Mott Street below Houston was one of such churches.

Saint Patrick’s Old Cathedral ARCHITECT: Joseph-François Mangin DATE: 1809-15 STYLE: Gothic Revival, Church Although only the shell of this building remained intact after the church was completely gutted by a fire in 1886, the original Cathedral, when completed in 1815, was one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the City. Some of this early Gothic work survived the restoration of 1868. Formal and severely plain in appearance, this smooth-faced windowless wall has great dignity and character in its restrained simplicity.

Although its cornerstone was laid in 1809, St. Patrick's was not dedicated until May 1815. The War of 1812 and financial difficulties within the diocese delayed its construction. Leading citizens attending the opening ceremonies included Mayor John Ferguson and his predecessor, DeWitt Clinton. The novelty of a Roman Catholic cathedral within the United States made the original St. Patrick's on Mott Street, below Houston, a tourist destination and an artist's subject.

St. Patrick's Old Cathedral

Old St. Patrick's Cathedral New York City's Roman Catholic cathedral was dedicated to the patron saint of Ireland. This original cathedral complex was built on Mott Street, in what was a rapidly developing residential neighborhood in the early 19th century. It is the oldest Roman Catholic church building in New York City. Mangin, the architect of City Hall, designed the original Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in a rather fanciful gothic inspired style. The church was built of local stone, with facades facing Mott and Mulberry Streets. The building was extensively restored following a disastrous fire in 1866. The cathedral moved uptown to Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets in 1879 and this building became known as Saint Patrick’s Old Cathedral.
