88 Grove Street
Post
88 Grove Street, ca. 1915. No. 88 (at right with the ironwork at the roofline) was constructed in 1827 as a Federal style home by Henry Halsey, a mason. In the 1860s the house was remodeled into a French Second Empire style complete with slate mansard and classic dormer windows (all the rage at the time). When this view was captured in the early 1910s, the structure was obscured by ivy and home to Italian landscape architect Ferruccio Vitale. Later the building was purchased by James Graham Phelps Stokes, referred to as a “millionaire Socialist." Today no. 88 looks very much as it did when it was altered in the middle of the 19th century.
