Edward S. Harkness Residence
Post
Edward S. Harkness Residence ca. 1910 The latter-day town house on Fifth Avenue was indeed a splendid affair, complete with elevators, imported rooms, basements, subbasements, and quarters for legions of servants. This stone palazzo was built for the ages; one of the few Fifth Avenue mansions remaining.
Stuart Duncan House
Post
1 East 75th Street ARCHITECT: Hale & Rogers DATE: 1907-08 STYLE: Italian Renaissance This imposing residence in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo is outstanding not only for the excellence of design and beauty of execution but also for a subtle richness of detail. Five stories high with basement and sub-basement, its dignity and quiet elegance are due in part to the large plain wall areas of Tennessee marble and the sparing but effective use of ornament.
MAS Manhattan Survey
Story
Between 1954 and 1957, the Municipal Art Society surveyed historic buildings in all five boroughs to create a database of potential landmarks to preserve. Local residents and MAS staff compiled individual sheets devoted to about 200 buildings. Each sheet outlined the building’s date, location, and style and provided a description and a small photograph. This is the list of Manhattan buildings.
