6 Weehawken Street

Overhang on Weehawken Street The Weehawken Street Historic District contains 14 buildings, dating from 1830 to 1938. A public market, known as the Greenwich or Weehawken Market, was established on the former site of Newgate State Prison in 1834 on the block bounded by West, Christopher, West 10th, and Weehawken Streets. The wood-framed structure at 392-393 West Street is likely to be a unique surviving portion of the short-lived market. Following the Civil War, this section of the Hudson River waterfront became one of Manhattan's busiest mercantile districts, resulting in the construction of numerous factories, stables, and tenement buildings.
