Story
New Yorkers have seen many changes in voting patterns, locations and technology through the years that echo some of the same challenges we confront today. As election day approaches, we look at election stories from years past and where they happened in the city.
Fort Greene Architecture
Walk
The 19th century saw Fort Greene develop from farmland held by a few families to a residential neighborhood, populated by a mix of Brooklyn’s working, merchant, and upper classes. Today, much of the neighborhood has been well preserved, including several blocks of brownstone and rowhouse architecture, churches, parkland, and civic institutions dating to the 19th century. Even in areas transformed by postwar urban renewal and commercial development traces of an earlier era remain.

The Brooklyn Masonic Temple at Clermont and Lafayette Avenues, ca. 1910. Built between 1906-1909, the imposing Neo-Classical structure is notable for its polychrome terra cotta ornamentation. The details of the facade are rendered in rich green, yellow, blue, brown, and cream.
