"Wood-frame row houses on Goodwin Place, Bushwick, Brooklyn, ca. 1935. During the 1880s, construction of elevated railways over Broadway (visible at far left), Lexington Avenue and Myrtle Avenue contributed to a surge of residential development in Bushwick. This group of nine wood-frame row houses was built between 1887-1893. The first three houses (farthest left, with higher cornices) were built in 1887 by Theobald Engelhardt, a prolific local architect whose designs included several brewery buildings, working class housing, and Bushwick Avenue mansions for brewery owners. The houses were still intact as late as 1976, when the Landmarks Preservation Commission report for a proposed Bushwick Avenue Historic District noted the deterioration and high risk of demolition. The proposed Historic District was never approved, and as predicted, the houses have not survived. Today the Goodwin Gardens community garden operates on the site."
