Metropolitan Opera (1883)

Manhattan: Broadway - 39th Street

The Metropolitan Opera House, Broadway, west side, from 39th to 40th Streets, showing also 39th Street, north side, from Broadway to Seventh Avenue. The Metropolitan was built in 1883, and its interior was rebuilt in 1892, after it was destroyed by fire. For some years there was bitter rivalry between the Metropolitan and the Academy of Music, but the Academy could not compete with its younger rival, and at last gave the production of opera, It is today (1936) the only permanent opera company in New York, although occasional and sometimes successful attempts are made to produce opera at popular price, especially at the Hippodrome.
