Evening Post Building

Evening Post Building ca. 1905. The Art Nouveau found little favor in New York, yet it offered many new possibilities to the designer. Here a beautiful expression of the underlying structure was combined with a novel, free-flowing design which subtly emphasized the vertical by means of elongation, both in the sculptured figures and in the niches behind them.

New York Evening Post Building ARCHITECT: Robert D. Kohn DATE: 1906-07 STYLE: Art Nouveau The Old New York Evening Post Building is one of the few outstanding Art Nouveau style buildings ever constructed in this country and its ornament and sculpture, attain a high artistic level. It is a fourteen-story building with steel-framed structure veneered with stone. Although Art Nouveau in inspiration, it is not copied from any particular building executed in that style. In general appearance, its ornament, windows, and copper roof are more Continental than American and are reminiscent of the boulevards of Paris.
