Board of Water Supply. Laying water distribution pipes. T. A. Gillespie Company, contractor. View on 86th Street near 4th Avenue looking west, showing the heavy Austin trenching machine in operation. This view illustrates the adaptability of the machine for use in making a wide, deep trench in a business thoroughfare. The buckets as arranged excavate a width of trench of 72 inches, the remaining 6 to 9 inches, required in either side being broken down by men with long bars as may be seen in the photograph, and by two to four men in the trench using picks, the number required depending upon the material encountered.
