St. Luke's Hospital, Midtown

Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 54th Street (West)

Fifth Avenue, at the N.W. corner of West 54th Street, showing St. Luke's Hospital, erected in 1858. Begiining in 1846 under the guidance of the Rev. Dr. Wm. A. Muhlenberg, rector of the Church of the Holy Communion, a public appeal for funds in 1850 resulted in the formation of a corporation and in subscriptions amounting to S100,000. An infirmary was opened on Sixth Avenue in 1854. This work was transfered to the newly erected hospital in
1858.
Increased demands necessitated the abandonment of this structure and the erection of a new building on 113th Street, near the Cathedral of St. John. The corner stone there was laid, May 6, 1893. For further details of this humamitarian work see pages 471-3 of

Crganized in 1850, the Sisters oi the Holy Communion opened an infirmary on Sixth Avenue in 1854. Vpon completion of the building shown in 1858 their work was transfered here. In connection with the hospital, s training. school for nurses was established in 1888. The cornerstone of their new hospital on Morningside Heights
(at West 113th Street) was laid :ay 6, 1E93.
Note at the riht margin the partial glimpse of Dr. Tall's Nifth Avenue Presbyterian Church at the N. W. corner of
eSt Ebth Street and the Avenue.
