Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 65th Street
Fifth Avenue, at the N.E. corner of East 65th Street, showing at that location the Temple Emanu-El, erected here in 1927 on the former site of the John Jacob Astor mansion. The photographer is viewing same from the 65th Street lateral highway thru Central Park.
This organization was formerly located at the N.E. corner of Fifth Avenue and East 43rd Street in a synagogue erected in 1868. Their earlier meetings were held in the Grand Street Court-room (1845 to 1850). Subsequently they purchased a forner church on Chrystie Street and remodeled same for their purpose (1850 to 1856). A Baptist church building on East 12th Street preceded the first Fifth Avenue structure (1856 to 1865).
