Manhattan: 8th Street - 5th Avenue
15-13-11-9 East 8th Street (formerly 53-59 Clinton Place), north
side, east of Fifth Avenue.
13 East 8th Street (formerly 55 Clinton Place), the house with the large vine, has been for some years the home of Richard Watson Gilder, author and Editor-in-Chief (since 1881) of The Century Magazine who will continue to reside here till his death in 1909. Eighth Street, west of Broadway, used to be called Clinton Place, the houses being numbered west from Broadway. The name and numbering was changed in 1899. As may be seen in this picture, the street has already lost its residential character. Nearly thirty years later this scene will not have changed greatly. Mr. Giloer's house will have been remodelled like No. V; the parlor store will be occupied by Fred Leighton's Indian Trading Post, and the basement
by a gown shop and an interior decorator.
