My mother, Anne Smith (fourth from the left). At age 16 she was with friends at the Children Overseas Aid Parade on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue on April 23, 1948. The New York Times front page reported that nearly 25,000 youngsters paraded to open a city-wide drive for $6,600.000 for American Overseas-Aid-United Nations Appeal for Children.
