St. Ursula's Academy
Post
St. Ursula's Academy, 1922. St. Ursula's, the oldest continuously operating Catholic girls' high school in New York State, was founded in 1855. German Ursuline nuns from St. Louis, at the invitation of a local reverend and the support of the Archbishop, moved to the Melrose area of the Bronx and founded a monastery. Upon its completion, the monastery began to offer classes and quickly attracted pupils from the local German community. The Monastery and Academy were incorporated together by the State in 1868 as the Ursuline Convent. However, the 1874 incorporation of the Bronx into New York City caused the relatively undeveloped land around St. Urusla's to quickly industrialize. This prompted the move to Bedford Park Boulevard in 1892 in order to secure less hectic surroundings for the convent. Its new hilly locale prompted the name to be changed to the Academy of Mount St. Ursula. Though the monastery has since dissolved, the Academy of Mount St. Ursula remains active.

Following the creation of the Greater New York City in 1898 the population of the Bronx boomed, and the need for additional municipal services became apparent. By 1905, the growth of the borough required expanded police forces. A new precinct, first known as the 41st Precinct, was completed in 1906 on quasi-rural land near the New York Botanical Garden. Designed by the firm of Stoughton & Stoughton, the neo-Italian Renaissance building is rendered in red brick and terra cotta. The wooden brackets at the roof, the clocktower, and the diapering (decorative diamond patterns) of the brick add to its quaint appearance. Renamed the 52nd Police Precinct by the mid-century, the building's exterior remains extremely well preserved. It is both a New York City landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Town Towers, ca. 1984. This Art Deco apartment building was built in 1931 and designed by Horace Ginsbern, who was the architect for a number of the Art Deco Grand Concourse apartments. The crenelated parapet (the alternating raised and lowered sections of the roofline) called out its style from a distance. The AIA Guide to New York also notes that the lobby of the building is "spectacular." Unfortunately at some point since this photograph was taken the roofline details have been removed, leaving the six-story apartment with a unadorned flat roofline.
