Fordham Metro North Railroad Station
Post
Railroad tracks came through the area now known as Fordham as early as 1842 by the New York and Harlem Railroad. The names of the railroad companies that passed through this station changed a number of times throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Currently this station serves both the Harlem and New Haven Lines of Metro-North Railroad. One of the busiest stations in the current Metro-North system, the station house, likely built in the late 19th century, still bares the name of the Metro-North predecessor, New York Central Railroad, over the main doors.
Enid A. Haupt Conservatory
Post
Enid A. Haupt Conservatory ca. 1978 The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory is perhaps the crown jewel of the New York Botanical Garden. It was key to the garden's initial mission to further " the collection of and culture of plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees, the advancement of botanical science and knowledge." The greenhouse was a relatively new typology, so the Botanical Garden hired the best architects of the type, Lord and Burnham Co., as its designers. The Haupt Conservatory was designed in the Italian Renaissance style. Portions of this crystal palace are renovated approximately every 20 years in order to ensure that the plants inside are taken care of with the most advanced technology. The high temperature and humidity of the tropical biomes cause the steel and glass structure to constantly expand, contract, and rust. Some of the more notable renovations occurred between 1935 and 1950 when much of the ornate decoration was removed in favor of a modernist look. Most recently, the Palm Dome has undergone structural stabilization and lead-based coating removal by Beyer Blinder Belle in 1973 and Jan Hird Pokorny Associates in 2019. The Conservatory is comprised of 11 biomes. The biomes, each contained under a dome, form a C-shape around the Palm Dome, the largest in the center. Interconnecting pavilions connect tropical plants, desert flora, fern forests, and seasonal exhibits to one another. The conservatory is still a major resource for the international study of horticulture, drawing hundreds of scientists a year. Built during an era where greenhouses were primarily an accessory of the elite, the New York Botanical Garden's conservatory enabled New Yorkers of all backgrounds to experience the flora and fauna of faraway lands.
MAS Bronx Survey
Story
Between 1954 and 1957, the Municipal Art Society surveyed historic buildings in all five boroughs to create a database of potential landmarks to preserve. Local residents and MAS staff compiled individual sheets devoted to about 200 buildings. Each sheet outlined the building’s date, location, and style and provided a description and a small photograph. This is the list of Bronx buildings with descriptions by architectural historian Agnes A. Gilchrist.
St. Ursula's Academy
Post
St. Ursula's Academy, 1922. St. Ursula's, the oldest continuously operating Catholic girls' high school in New York State, was founded in 1855. German Ursuline nuns from St. Louis, at the invitation of a local reverend and the support of the Archbishop, moved to the Melrose area of the Bronx and founded a monastery. Upon its completion, the monastery began to offer classes and quickly attracted pupils from the local German community. The Monastery and Academy were incorporated together by the State in 1868 as the Ursuline Convent. However, the 1874 incorporation of the Bronx into New York City caused the relatively undeveloped land around St. Urusla's to quickly industrialize. This prompted the move to Bedford Park Boulevard in 1892 in order to secure less hectic surroundings for the convent. Its new hilly locale prompted the name to be changed to the Academy of Mount St. Ursula. Though the monastery has since dissolved, the Academy of Mount St. Ursula remains active.
Fordham University Administration Building
Post
Administration Building ca. 1954 The Administration Building (now known as Cunniffe House) was originally a country house of the Greek Revival Period. The interior has been remodeled to serve as offices and the original character of the house is lost. The exterior, however, has remained with the west facade unaltered. Wings have been added at the north and south. The east facade has been recently stuccoed and a new door has been added. The original character of the house is only in the west facade. IT is of great interest in itself and as a comparison with the Bartow Mansion also in the Bronx. The native stone has been shaped but not smoothed. The rich palmette motifs in the marble cornices above the windows are the most striking feature. The tripartite window in the center of the second floor has a full entablature. The square marble porch with both piers and Ionic columns is a good example of the 1830's Greek Revival Porch.
