The Bronx Food Walk
Story
Just north of Manhattan is one of New York City’s most diverse and culturally enriching boroughs: the Bronx. The Bronx is home to Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the New York Botanical Garden, and so many other wonderful sites to visit. The popularity and spread of hip-hop music in the 1970 and 80s can be traced back to the Bronx. Besides the historical sites you can visit, you will surely be hungry after a long day of exploring the Bronx and its expansive history. The Bronx’s iconic Arthur Avenue has a plethora of Italian cuisine and dishes you can choose from, while you can find an abundance of gourmet Latin restaurants in other neighborhoods. While you might not be able to hit all these locations in one day on foot, be sure to check out these food establishments after a fun outing to a landmark in the Bronx.
2415 Marion Avenue
Post
Due to the hilly terrain of the Bronx as well as some parts of upper Manhattan, these steep, often block-long, open air staircases were built to accommodate pedestrian traffic. Referred to as step streets, the staircase seen to the right of 2415 Marion Avenue is one of 63 such "streets" in the Bronx. Though some date to the end of the 19th century, this staircase was constructed by the WPA during the Depression.
St. Barnabas Hospital, Home for Incurables
Post
St. Barnabas Hospital, Home for Incurables, 1932 The hospital is the oldest care facility in New York City. Established after the end of the Civil War in 1866, the hospital was one of the first homes for people with chronic diseases or mental illnesses. These people could not be treated in a regular hospital due to risk of infection from other contagious diseases, like pneumonia or tuberculosis. St. Barnabas Hospital for Incurables (later renamed St. Barnabas Hospital for Chronic Diseases) moved from its original location to its current, much larger site in 1874, in order to accommodate more patients. A third of the hospital’s patients were treated without charge, so the institution received sponsorship from high-profile donors, including Cornelius Vanderbilt and Theodore Roosevelt. The hospital continued its expansion intermittently from 1926 through 2015, adding more beds, facilities, programs, and residential areas.
Flood Triangle
Post
Flood Triangle, 1938. This three-sided patch of land has been a park since 1849. The lot, once part of William Powell's Union Hill Farm, came under the control of the Parks Department of Westchester County (where this was located until the late 19th century) for use as a "public place or open space" in March of that year. It then became a public park in the city of New York in 1895. The name Flood likely came from a local soldier killed in the First World War. This 1938 photograph depicts two large elm trees which no longer stand here, though the small open space still has smaller foliage and benches used by the local community.
