Apartment building at Bruckner Boulevard and Buhre Avenue, 1932. When this six-story Art Deco building was completed in 1931, it sat across Eastern Boulevard from the southwestern section of Pelham Bay Park, the city’s largest public park. However, as the East Bronx was carved up by highway construction during the mid-20th century, the Bruckner Expressway created a barrier between the Pelham Bay neighborhood and the park. Construction of the Pelham Bay segment of the Bruckner Expressway was completed in 1961. Today, the apartment building retains much of its original colored brickwork, but roofline detail has been removed.

Westchester Avenue, west side, between Hobart and Morris Park Avenues, showing the "Spy Oak," June 1926. The exact location of this tree is unknown as it now longer stands. It was said to be the largest of its kind east of the Rocky Mountains and the last remaining vestige of the vast primeval forest that once covered this entire area. History tells us that during the American Revolution, a British spy, captured in this neighborhood, was summarily hanged from one of its branches, hence its name.
