Jerome Avenue, west side, at West 170th Street. The W.P.A. men are working on a little park directly to the west of the elevated structure of the I.R.T. subway which runs on Jerome Avenue. The building in the foreground, 1405 Jerome Avenue, was home to 7 Santini Brothers. The company was a leading export packing business in the early twentieth century. Pasquale Santini, the eldest of seven brothers, founded the firm in 1905 after migrating from the Tuscan Hills of Italy. He ran the business with his brothers, Pietro, Paride, Rinaldo, Agostino, Goffredo, and Martino, with the last two joining in 1907. As economic conditions changed, the Santini family eventually sold the company to another moving and storage company in 1988, whereupon the new owners decided to dismantle and sell the various operations of the company. By 1993, the company was completely dissolved.

1295 Shakespeare Avenue, about 1924. The two-story clapboard house appears on Bronx maps as early as 1891, when Shakespeare Avenue was known as Marcher Avenue. Despite the 20th century addition of sky-blue vinyl, the house’s bones remain intact, including its distinctive first floor bay window.
