Vyse Mansion
Post

Vyse Mansion, ca. 1893. Described as "one of the Bronx's most attractive homes" the Vyse Mansion was surrounded on all sides by tall two-story Corinthian columns that created a first floor piazza and a second floor porch. According to an 1886 'History of Westchester County' (this area was Westchester at that point), the home was erected by a wealthy Irish linen merchant named Thomas Richardson and later owned by its namesake, a T.A Vyse. The large estate was known as "a model of rural beauty" with grottos, aviaries, statues, and conservatories. A 'History of the Bronx' published in 1906 states the mansion was demolished "a few years ago" and had been replaced by a number of houses.

Public School 98, 1933. Constructed between 1929 and 1931, Public School 98 was, as noted in the Landmarks Commission report, "the first thoroughly 'modernist' Art Deco public school building in New York City." Planned and designed by the Board of Education's Bureau of Design and Construction, headed by Walter C. Martin, the building was strikingly new in style, both in massing and in ornamentation. The entrance and corner tower, seen here, mimics the set-back look of contemporary Deco skyscrapers. It was also the first school structure planned specifically as a junior high school (as previously they had been located in modified elementary facilities). The school was named for Herman Ridder, a prominent journalist, German-language publisher and philanthropist, who had passed away in 1915.

Starlight Amusement Park
Post

Starlight Amusement Park ca. 1940 The first amusement park in the Bronx, Starlight Park opened as Exposition Park in 1918 as part of a trade exposition intended to curry foreign investment after World War I. Following the Exposition's end in 1918, it became Starlight Park. Its main attraction was a gigantic, naturalistic swimming pool, as well as assorted rides and games. Later on it, a stadium known as the Coliseum was built and was home to the New York Giants for the better part of a decade. However, by 1940, the park was closed and systematically demolished.

Bronx: Starlight Park. Active Atheism These huge caricatures of the Church & Czarisa, made by New York Communists, are like those constantly used in Russian anti-religious Propaganda. These grotesque figures may have meant a great deal to real grown- up red at a meeting in Starlight Park, the Bronx, in New York City, March 16th, 1930, but they were just amusing toys to the youngsters gathered about them. The figure at left represents the Church - (Rasputin, the Black Monk) and at right is Imperialism in figure of Nicholas - Czar of all the Russians. NEG # 3207
