Epworth Methodist Church
Post
The Epworth Methodist Church was a humble wood-frame building constructed prior to 1895. It served the local community's religious and, in some cases, "moral" needs. (A 1895 NY Times article notes that the pastor of this church along with the heads of other Whitestone churches—of various denominations— joined forces to crusade against the town's current drinking establishments and the permitting of new liquor licenses. At that point, Whitestone had 3,500 residents and 44 saloons.) In 1975 the building was purchased by the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church. The new owners used the slightly dilapidated wood-frame church until sometime between 2007 and 2010 when they replaced the humble religious edifice with a somewhat gargantuan orange-brick building with arches aplenty and various domed roofs.
