Public Bath No. 10
Post
Public Bath No. 10 at the foot of West 51st Street and the Hudson River, ca. 1902 The city’s floating baths — public bathing areas on the city’s waterways, enclosed by floating pontoons — were introduced in 1870, but unofficial bathing areas existed decades earlier. Bathing hours were gender segregated, with dips limited to 20 minutes, and free to the public. The 1901 edition of the New York City Red Book lists six such baths on the Hudson, including this swimming area at the foot of West 51st Street.

“Twelfth Avenue, north from West 45th Street, showing this marginal thoroughfare prior to improvement. The pier shown is No. 86 North River, located at the foot of 46th Street. The bend beyond is at 47th Street. April 11, 1924.” Eugene Armbruster’s photo captures the West Side waterfront about a decade prior to the development of the West Side Elevated Highway. Today, Pier 86 (lower left) is home to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, aboard the USS Intrepid, a decommissioned World War II-era aircraft carrier.
