The F. Aue Company was an established millwright and machine firm that had long occupied a space on East 62nd Street. In 1913 they moved to a space in the building midframe with the peaked facade. (Later promotional materials also have the firm located at 405 East 91st Street.) The company manufactured and maintained brewing equipment and given the omnipresence and popularity of breweries in German-immigrant communities in Yorkville, the South Bronx, and Ridgewood/Bushwick, they were likely very busy. A 1917 advertisement touts their "latest improved automatic bottle washing machine." Today, while the rest of this block remains largely intact architecturally, the F. Aue Company building has been replaced with a contemporary low-rise apartment building.
