When this building was completed in 1921, S. Karpen & Brothers, a Chicago-based upholstered furniture manufacturing company claimed that it was “the finest structure devoted exclusively to furniture making in this country” with over 150,000 square feet of floor space distributed over six stories. The factory’s unadorned concrete façade, consisting of 21 bays punctured by raised piers, is complemented by the decorative brickwork found at the cornice line and top story. In addition to its sheer size, the building stands out for the way it angles to conform to the curve of Northern Boulevard. Out of all of the factory’s occupants, Standard Motor Products had the longest history at this site, moving into the building in 1936 and manufacturing automobile engine parts here until 2008. Converted to small-scale commercial use between 2010 and 2014, the structure hosts a number of tenants, including the headquarters of Standard Motor Products, the Jim Henson Company’s New York office and a one-acre organic farm on its rooftop.

Famous Players- Lasky Corporation Studios, ca. 1920. Famous Players-Lasky Corporation was an American motion picture and distribution company created in 1916 through a merger. The new firm built this film studio in Astoria because of its proximity to the Broadway theatre district. The first two Marx Brothers films were shot here in 1929 and 1930. In 1932 all Paramount studio operations (which Famous Lasky was now part of) were moved to California. Between 1942 and 1971 the studios were used by the Army Pictorial Service for training films. Since 1993 Sesame Street has filmed here and in 2013 it became New York City's only backlot.

38-13 Northern Boulevard, 1929. With its distinctive, patterned brickwork and its height on a block nearly void of structures (today the building has one low-rise neighbor to the east), the Hook and Ladder 66 firehouse was and is still eye-catching. In 1898 following the consolidation of New York City, one of the (many) Long Island City volunteer fire stations became Ladder 16, and soon after Ladder 66 of the FDNY. Hook and Ladder 66 moved into their brand new station house in 1904 and remained their even as they were renumbered again in 1913 (becoming Ladder 116). The use of horses for firefighting efforts ended here in 1922 and within a few decades, the constant traffic on Northern Boulevard likely made entering and exiting the station difficult for trucks. Hook and Ladder 116 moved out in 1947. Today the station is used by one of the city's elite Emergency Medical Squad- ESU units.
