Public School 149
Post
Built in 1935 as part of the Works Progress Administration, Public School 149 is an elementary school. The building was renovated in 1962 and in the mid 1960s became the location of a major school integration battle. In 1963 the Board of Education decided to "pair" this school with another elementary school six blocks away in nearby Corona. Students from both schools were to attend P.S 92 (an older building with a large African-American student body) for first and second grade and then attend the upper grades in P.S 149. Many of the white parents of 149 students objected to this plan and pulled their children out of the school, and placed them in parochial or private schools. In the end, despite the threat of boycotts and arrests, the white parents won and the integration was largely abandoned.
