Jacob Dangler House
Post
Jacob Dangler House, ca. 1975. This French Gothic Revival mansion was built for Jacob Dangler, a German-born producer of provisions, bank trustee, and real estate investor. Dangler’s mansion was completed in 1902, a few blocks from the factory where his cold cuts were produced (his bologna was especially popular) and his Myrtle Avenue storefront. In 1941, two years after Dangler’s death, the house was sold. The Order of the Eastern Star, a Masonic organization, purchased the building in 1967 and operated an event space into the 21st century. In August of 2022, the building was demolished after the Landmarks Preservation Commission failed to act to designate it.

Jacob Dangler House, ca. 1975. The French Gothic mansion may appear out of place on a block of brownstone townhouses, but its architecture reflects the heritage of it first owner. Jacob Dangler, a successful producer of provisions, was born in Alsace-Lorraine, the oft-disputed territory at the French-German border.

Throop Avenue Presbyterian Church
Post
Throop Avenue Presbyterian Church, ca. 1905. The Throop Avenue Presbyterian Church was founded in 1852 and their original church building was completed in 1867.The congregation grew over the next few decades and by the 1880s the leaders had decided a new building was needed. Architects Fowler & Hough were commissioned for the new church, and they designed a Romanesque Revival brick building with a tall bell tower. Constructed began in 1889 but disaster struck a few months into the project. On a cold and windy morning in January of 1890 a gust of wind picked up the entire brick wall of one side of the church (no roof had been constructed yet) and tossed it onto the wood-frame house next door. The house was destroyed and two children were killed with a number of other family members injured. The church paid for the funerals and all related costs. The church was completed following the disaster and dedicated in 1891. The church suffered a massive fire in 1910 and the community decided against rebuilding on the plot that had already seen so much tragedy. The congregation moved to a new location at 257 Macon Street in Stuyvesant Heights before finally moving to Rosedale, Queens where the church is now known as Throop Memorial Church.

Townhouse at the northwest corner of Tompkins Park, October 25, 1957. This corner townhouse was built 1888 and 1904, and features intricate cornice detail, decorative terra cotta spandrels, a rock-faced brownstone belt course at the parlor floor, and a rusticated brownstone base. It’s possible that the house was built for John M. Wolf, the owner of a stove repair business, whose address was listed as 660 Lafayette Avenue at the time of his death in 1909.

A milk delivery at the corner of Willoughby Avenue and Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn, where lengths of pipe line the street during construction. The Alexander Campbell Milk Company distributed milk in glass bottles from wagons that began their daily routes at 2 a.m. Campbell claimed to have built the first creamery for bottled milk in the United States and developed the first glass bottle for milk by 1910. It merged with Borden's Farm Products in 1918. The grocery selling "milk, butter, eggs, and fancy groceries" and displaying a pyramid of sardine cans is gonereplaced eventually by the Red Gate Community Gardenbut the brownstones on the right are still standing. Construction at this corner was particularly tricky because the water pipe had to cross underneath the existing brick sewer. September 23, 1914.
