Mechanics at the 39th Street Garage, 1939. During the 1930s the Brooklyn Bus Company, a subsidiary of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation and the holder of a franchise for all Brooklyn bus service, used two large structures on Third Avenue between 37th and 39th Streets as their garage. Here mechanics are working on the frames and shells of their rolling stock.

"39th Street, west from near Fourth Avenue toward the upper New York Bay, 1940." This westward view towards the water shows, at center, the elevated structure of the old B.M.T line which was in the process of being converted into the roadway of the Gowanus Parkway (now Gowanus Expressway). The streetcar tracks visible on 39th Street lead down to the water and the 39th Street Ferry Terminal from where ferries traveled to both St. George, Staten Island and the Battery Maritime Building in Manhattan. Until 1935 passengers traveling from Manhattan to this Brooklyn terminal could transfer to the South Brooklyn Railway to continue their journey.

Bus on lift at the 39th Street Garage, 1939. This American Car & Foundry Company bus was operated by the Brooklyn Bus Company and serviced here at at the 39th Street Depot. Buses manufactured by ACF began service in Brooklyn in 1930 and continued until 1960. The model in this photograph looks to be the ACF Model H-17-S. In 1938, 35 of these buses were delivered to the Brooklyn Bus Company.

At the center of the photograph is Betania Baptist Kirke (Church), a Scandinavian church which was not an uncommon sight in Sunset Park in the early and middle of the 20th century. Danes, Swedes, and Norwegians made up a large population of the neighborhood, with a section of 8th Avenue from Sunset Park to Bay Bridge called Lapskaus Boulevard, after the Nordic beef stew. The building, though somewhat drastically altered, does retain some of its original features, most notably the slanted peak of the roof seen behind the new second floor facade. The building is still used for religious purposes as Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal Alpha y Omega.
Buffalo Bill Comes to Brooklyn image

Buffalo Bill Comes to Brooklyn
Story

Buffalo Bill's West West show brought the frontiers of America to the shores of industrial Brooklyn. William "Bill" F. Cody, a.k.a. "Buffalo Bill" was a real-life American Cowboy who's fantastical (and fictional) antics led him to a career on the stage. The first of his shows opened in Omaha, Nebraska in 1883, at a time when outdoor shows had reached peak popularity. The semi-authentic shows replicated real battles fought between White Americans and Native Americans, sometimes using performers who had participated in the original battles.
Bergen House image

Bergen House
Post

Bergen House, ca. 1880. Known as the DeHart or Bergen House, this structure once stood on a plot west of Third Avenue near 37th and 38th Streets. The home was supposedly constructed in the mid to late 1600s for Symon (Simon) Aertszen DeHart. A record of the visit of two Labadists (a 17th-century Protestant religious community) missionaries to the home in 1679-80 notes: "They spent one night at the house of Simon DeHart, where they supped on raw and roasted oysters, a roasted haunch of venison, a wild turkey, and a goose, and sat before a hickory fire blazing half-way up the chimney." Passed through generations of Simon's descendants during the 1700s, the home was sold away from the DeHart/Bergen clan around the end of the 18th or early 19th century. Captured here circa 1880, the home was demolished before the turn of the 20th century. (Sources differ on the exact location of the house. All agree it was near Third Avenue —which was on the waterfront at that point— but some say 33rd Street, others, 37th, and still others between 38th and 39th.)

Public School No. 82, 1930. Public School 82 was constructed in 1891 and designed by James. W. Naughton who was Brooklyn’s superintendent of school buildings and repairs from 1879 to 1898. He designed more than 100 schools during his tenure, including P.S 107 on 8th Avenue which has many similar features to P.S. 82. The Romanesque Revival building with the ivy growing on the facade is no longer, replaced some time after 1930 with a simple brick school building for now Public School 371, a small high school.
