Machate Circle
Post

Machate Circle, unknown date. Originally, this area of land surrounding Prospect Park’s entrance was known as Park Circle. It was renamed Machate Circle in 1989 to honor the life and service of anti-crime officer, Robert Machate, who was shot and killed in pursuit of a suspect in March of that year. Similar to the other park entrances, Machate Circle is part of a greater architectural narrative. It exemplifies the intent of park architects, Olmsted and Vaux, who designed the circle to be space of transition between the busy city and the bucolic escape offered by the park.

"Horse Tamers", ca. 1975 This statue, titled "Horse Tamers," adorns the entrance to Prospect Park, representing the power of the mind over that of brute strength. The statue was created by Frederick MacMonnies, whose work can be seen all over the city. MacMonnies reportedly made plaster molds of live horses for this statue, to make it as realistic as possible. "Horse Tamers" was commissioned in 1894 and unveiled in 1899. It was one a few new sculptural works installed in and around the park in the 1890s, under the planning and direction of architect Stanford White. "Horse Tamers" did not have an easy journey to its current home, however. From MacMonnies' home in Giverny, France, where he lived in an artist's colony, a section of the bronze statue was damaged while shipping, then lost during a shipwreck. It was recovered and reworked by the artist before being dedicated in 1899.

Prospect Park Parade Grounds

Prospect Park Parade Grounds, ca. 1895. Parade Grounds at the southernmost tip of Prospect Park, named for its use as a drill field for Union Soldiers during the Civil War, once had 13 baseball fields. The Parade Grounds sent more players to Major League Baseball than any other New York ballpark. According to Bob McGee, author of “The Greatest Ballpark Ever: Ebbets Field and the Story of the Brooklyn Dodgers,” the Parade Grounds was not just a neighborhood park. "It was a boroughwide showcase for young teenage talent in the city’s most populous borough, which, coincidentally, had far and away traditionally the greatest number of amateur teams.” Among the future major leaguers who played there were: Koufax; Hoyt; Joe and Frank Torre; Bob and Ken Aspromonte; Cy Block; Chuck Connors, aka “The Rifleman”; Harry Eisenstat; Sid Gordon; Buddy Hassett; Billy Jurges; Bill Lohrman; Sam Mele; Saul Rogovin; and Marius Russo.

William and Lulu Norwood House
Post

William and Lulu Norwood House, September 1, 1958. This nearly 5,000 square foot home was constructed in 1906 for real estate broker William Norwood and his wife. A number of architectural features present a Northern Italian Villa style, including the porch, tower, and the deep eaves (or part of the roof that overhangs the edge of the building). The rest of the home is a solid Colonial Revival. Despite the large home, the oddly- shaped lot has almost no backyard space as the subway (today's Q train) runs directly behind it and the rail infrastructure was present prior to the home's construction.

Ocean Parkway Bike Path
Story

Stretching from the southwest entrance of Prospect Park to the ocean shore of Coney Island, Ocean Parkway spans just under five miles across the borough of Brooklyn. In 1894, the parkway became New York City’s first dedicated bicycle path, and the very first in the United States!
